With thanks to @The_WriteReads, @NeemTreePress, & @strangelymagic for the amazing book box and place on the Tour.

Synopsis

It’s the year 2123, and 16-year-old Adina has just accidentally killed 14,756 people. Raised in the eco-bubble of Eden Five, Adina has always believed that the Amonston Corporation’s giant greenhouse would keep her safe forever. But when her own careless mistake leads to an explosion that incinerates Eden Five, she and a small group of survivors must brave the barren wastelands outside the ruined Dome to reach the Sanctuary before their biofilters give out and their DNA threatens to mutate in the toxic air.

They soon discover that the outside isn’t as deserted as they were made to believe, and the truth is unearthed on their dangerous expedition. As time runs out, Adina must tackle her guilty conscience and find the courage to get everyone to safety. Will she make it alive, or will the Nomalies get to her first?

Review

An excellent debut YA dystopian novel painting a vivid picture of a terrifying future that seems all too possible! It’s eye-opening and engaging, volatile and foreboding, and drew me in from that striking opening paragraph!

The amazing writing surrounds the reader in the atmospheric and hostile world so well crafted fully conveying the urgency and bleakness. The countdown chapter headings give immediacy to the storyline making it feel as though events are unfolding in real time.

Adina is one of many living in Eden Five inside an eco-bubble protecting them from the toxic wastelands outside their door. The inhabitable terrain is not only poisonous but filled with savage Nomalies. She is a strong female lead who doesn’t give up. The story shows her contrasting nature – she can be extremely caring yet needlessly cruel at times. I enjoyed seeing her growth throughout the chapters, initially her self-centred nature prevails, however as her eyes are opened to devastating truths she wants to make things right, and will stop at nothing to protect her loved ones.

As all Adina knows implodes, she must head into the dangerous unknown with her best friend Dejen (whose curiosity about the outside world leads to soul-destroying revelations,) her crush Otienno, her sisters, and Baba Weska (who shows us how someone different is treated.)

What follows is a perilous journey for survival as they search for answers and unravel the truth. I loved the glimpses of hope and courage as they pierced through such dark times. It’s a bold, tense read, the road curves in unexpected directions and anything can happen!

The story delivers an interesting exploration of timely themes including environmental sustainability, GM foods, corporate greed, exploitation and appropriation of resources in Africa, abuse of power, and political cover ups. We see how scientific breakthroughs paved with good intentions can become completely warped over time.

Feast of Ashes is a must for any dystopian fans – I’m eager to see where the story will take us next!
