Struggling to make sense of his new life and finding it hard to adapt in school, he begins to notice other – even stranger – changes taking place when a new wind farm appears off the island’s coast.

With the help of three school friends with additional support needs, Max discovers that a sinister scientist, Doctor Ashwood, is using wind turbines to experiment on the islanders. They must find a way to shut down the government’s secret test before it spins out of control…

Review

A terrific story exploring the importance of inclusion and thriving through adversity. It takes place on an atmospheric Scottish Island and gives an original look at the darker side of technological advancement. I enjoyed the absorbing writing, intriguing mystery and powerful messages weaved throughout.

Max is the beating heart of the story; following a life altering accident he’s learning a whole new way to interact with people and the world around him. Your heart goes out to him as he’s dealing with all the feelings and struggles this brings; trying to reconcile his old life with the new one and nothing’s the same.

We see Max navigating the school dynamic, he’s no longer in the “popular” group and experiences first hand how difficult it is being entertainment for the bullies. His family life becomes fractured and it’s difficult to communicate with his father. We can feel the isolation and loneliness that he experiences.

With help from his new supportive friends, Max begins to realise being different isn’t such a bad thing which was wonderful to see. He channels his inner strength and his character grows and develops before our eyes.

As strange things start to happen and weird behaviour becomes the norm, Max and his friends realise they need to take action. Can harmony be restored or is it too late?

This is another engaging read from Victoria Williamson with diverse characters, important themes and a rewarding book for a younger audience to experience.
