Synopsis

Review

This is a book to take your time with as you get lost in the poetic prose and beautiful story unfolding. It’s a heartwarming tale, rich in sentiment and meaning, examining the transformative power of connection as Shuichi and Kanta embark on incredible personal journeys linking them together in unexpected ways.

I enjoyed the short chapter structure and smooth flow of words as the story thoughtfully explores love, loss, friendship and healing. It begins with a melancholic tone as past and present weave together and bittersweet memories are unlocked. As the narrative moves along and perspectives shift hope radiates from the pages.

Shuichi is feeling untethered in the wake of tragedy. A serendipitous meeting with 8 year old Kanta lifts his apathy sparking his curiosity in the world again. Kanta is fighting his own struggles of bullying and feeling isolated. They form a strong bond and help each other rediscover what’s important in life; the joy and happiness each brings shines through and was a delight to read.

Messina terrifically shows the complexities of life and love through the eyes of such memorable characters as they learn to open their hearts again. The powerful emotions slowly creep up for an ultimately uplifting story that stays with you – I’d highly recommend.
