✨Book Tour✨ The Goddess of Nothing at All by Cat Rector

With thanks @The_WriteReads, @BBNYA_Official and @FolioSociety for a place on the Finalist Tour for the Book Bloggers’ Novel of the Year Award 2022 for the second place Finalist.

Synopsis

Perhaps you know the myths.

Furious, benevolent Gods. A tree that binds nine realms. A hammer stronger than any weapon. And someday, the end of everything. But few have heard of me.

Looking back, it’s easy to know what choices I might have made differently. At least it feels that way. I might have given up on my title. Told my father he was useless, king of Gods or no, and left Asgard. Made a life somewhere else.

Maybe I would never have let Loki cross my path. Never have fallen in love. But there’s no going back. We were happy once. And the price for that happiness was the end of everything.

Review

I love a myth retelling! Rector pens a unique one that’s well researched keeping to its roots whilst unleashing Sigyn’s voice bringing it vividly to life. We see everything through her eyes and it’s brutal in parts and beautiful in others. The story weaves a rich tapestry of love, family and identity, and explores how the unintended consequences of choices play out, the good and the bad. Is our fate sealed or can it be altered?

I really enjoyed the writing style, it pulls you in and takes a hold so you feel the settings, the events unfolding, and all the emotions. We completely inhabit the world so spectacularly brought to life and I couldn’t stop reading!

Sigyn craves a title, it’s recognition she deserves with the respect and worth that comes along with it. Odin dangles it to keep her in check and manipulates everyone for his own whims. Sigyn is strong, determined and brave – she’s not afraid to fight for what she believes in and her building resentment grows as her title is denied.

Enter Loki, our Trickster who’s chaos personified. We get to see a gentler side to him and it was great seeing him embrace his true-self. Sigyn brings him back from exile to help her get the coveted title. I loved their interactions, the humour, the teasing, the support. As they bond over the injustices they face an unexpected love grows. As they try to carve out a life together the danger, cruelty and moral dilemmas infiltrate their lives.

Rector skilfully breathes life in to these morally grey characters, it’s them against the wrath of the gods. We feel their powerlessness, the intense pain and darkness that surrounds them as they take hit after hit with no let up. There’s betrayal that cuts to the bone and real heart in your mouth moments that stay with you.

The Goddess of Nothing at All is a gem of a debut, part dark fantasy and part epic love story. It’s a powerful story of enduring and striving for a better world. I’m still reeling!

Perfect for fans of Circe, The Witch’s Heart, and The Silence of the Girls.
